Life of a Lung Fish

Some people might need background information for this to be funny... a lung fish can live out of water for four years. I always wondered what happened when the four years was up, so one very bored day in my comicking class, I drew up this little doodle. It made me laugh so much, but I thought it was more sleep deprivation than anything. But then other people started laughing! One bored night, I then decided it would be a GREAT idea to create this comic in gouache resist. A gouache resist (also called gouache-out) is when you paint on a piece of watercolor paper, but only the parts with color. You lay it on VERY thick. When finished, let it dry for a long while. Then comes the scary part. You cover the ENTIRE thing in india ink. Make it all black. Then you run it under cold water! The ink flakes right off, but stains the unpainted parts of the paper. Pieces of ink stick to the paint in some places and you can rub the paint to lighten the tones. Every piece you create will be distinct from the patterns of ink that sticks to the paint. It's much fun, if not horribly time consuming. And painting a comic in it? Sweet jeebus, is all I'm saying.
